Is History Necessary to Society

This was the first Tutor Marked Assignment of my Arts Foundation Course at the open University many moons ago. My instinct and belief was that it patently is NOT, but then we would have to get into the semantics of what is meant in either case by society.....in ANY case we were told, politely that it really WAS - if we were to have any hope of passing the assignment. And that was my first lesson in just how prescriptive even further education (where at last you think you are choosing what you study) actually is. How it dictates within constricting parameters what we are actually taught and promotes blatant lying above the pursuit of getting to anywhere near approaching the truth,
